  • VMware Academy Training Experience – vSphere 6 ICM Course with 360GSP

Over the years I have 360gspexperienced a lot of VMware training, whether that’s been with a VMware VATC (VMware Approved Training Centre), Directly with VMware or via the VMware Academy route.

My previous VCP 4 and 5 training has been carried out via the Academy route and rarely differed from the usual VATC provided training, the only difference between the Academy and VATC’s in the past was that the Academy could offer weekend training dates and also lasted 8 days instead of the usual 5 days.

In previous times training with an Academy still meant that you had to sign up for the class on the MyLearn VMware site, had to attend all the lessons and be signed off the class by the instructor, you also received a heavily discounted voucher for the VCP exam and a reasonable time to sit that exam. Again training with a VATC only provided the course attendance and no discounted VCP voucher. This time around I discovered that there has been a change to the way that the course attendance is marked and also an additional benefit that all students should use to aid in their study and understanding of the technology.

  • VCP5-DCV (VCP550) Exam Blueprint Downloadable Documents Bundle

As preparation for my VCP5-DCV (VCP-550) study Guide I downloaded all of the documents mentioned in the blueprint and decided to put them in to an easily downloadable bundle for everyone else to download.

The zip file contains folders for each objective and contains some duplications but for the most part shared files for each objective can be found under the common files folder in that objective folder.

The file can be downloaded here

  • Installing the Home Lab – Configuring Synology iSCSI Storage

In earlier posts we have installed and configured vCenter 5.5 as well as assigning hosts to it, in this next post we are going to configure our iSCSI storage to allow us to later setup Multi-Pathing from our hosts to our storage.

In my home lab I am using a dedicated Synology DS1513+ for my storage, so let’s go set up the iSCSI LUNs on the Synology.

  • Installing the Home Lab – Configuring Datacenters and Hosts

In the previous post we installed and configured access to vCenter 5.5, it’s great that we have vCenter installed but with no datacenter or Hosts configured we aren’t going to be doing too much with our new installation so what we need to do is add a new datacenter and a host to allow us to work with the vSphere suite.

  • Installing the Home Lab – Installing vCenter 5.5 on Windows 2012R2

This post will detail all the steps required to install vCenter 5.5a on to a Windows 2012R2 guest machine, I should add that at the time of writing 2012R2 isn’t on the supported OS list and that there is an additional step that needs to be done to ensure that the installation succeeds first time.

You will need to get a copy of OCSetup.exe because for some insane reason Microsoft dropped the use of it in Windows 2012R2 (it’s present in 2012). As a side note you can also use a copy of the file from Windows 2008R2 if you don’t have 2012 available. Once you have a copy place it in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

  • Installing the Home Lab – VMware Certificates – Part Two

In the first post in this series we installed the Windows 2012 R2 Root Certificate Authority. This, the second in a series of posts details the configuration of the VMware specific Template and the distribution of the Root CA Certificate.

  • Installing the Home Lab – VMware Certificates – Part One

The following post, the first in series of posts, details the installation and configuration of a Windows 2012R2 Enterprise CA to be used with a VMware Infrastructure Home Lab.

It is assumed at this stage that you have a single host installed and are running a Windows Domain controller.

As this is a home lab I have chosen to install the CA on to my Domain Controller rather than a dedicated server but if your environment is capable of running a dedicated CA VM then please do so.

The installation can be carried out either using a PowerShell script or by using the Microsoft Wizard. I have only documented the PowerShell method here but you can use the Wizard if you want instead.

Use the PowerShell script below to install the CA and Web Enrolment roles.

  • New VMware Certification Offerings – VMware Certified Associate (VCA)

One of the things that VMware hadn’t followed up was their Associate certification offerings, when they first announced the VCA4 DT exam a couple of years ago there was a hope that VMware would offer further exams but for the last couple of years they haven’t. That’s just changed Smile

VMware have just announced the availability of more VMware Certified Associate level certifications (VCA). Like the earlier VMware VCA4 DT certification there are no mandatory training course or pre-reqs for the VCA exams but there are recommended FREE on-line training courses which can be taken for the exam preparation.

There are currently 3 exams which are available now for registration with the VCA-NV exam coming soon.

Below are the VMware Certified Associate which are available:

More information about the new certification can be found on the VMware Certification page and the VMware Certfication Road Map

  • 360GSP VCP 5 – DV ICM Course

I recently had the experience of going back to 360GSP to undertake my VCP 5 training. I had used them previously for my VCP 4 training and was more than impressed the first time around.

So first things first, there have been some changes to the way that 360GSP run their VMware courses, previously they ran the VCP 4 training over 3 weekends, this time around however the VCP 5 ICM (Install Config and Manage) course is being run over 4 week ends, that’s 8 days of training where as if you go through most training providers they only do it in 5 days.

For those of you who don’t know, the VCP tests more than what’s covered in just the ICM course, it’s expected that students will also use extra material to cover the shortfall in knowledge to pass the VCP5 exam, so by using the extra days study to cover extra material 360GSP are hopefully providing the extra boost to their students to help them a little further along with their study prep for the exam.

Another thing that’s changed since my ICM 4 course was the class size, the new courses now have 16 students in the class (actually 17 in my class as one of their students who was booked on the course in the new year had to get bumped onto this course due to a change in circumstances), with 17 students on the class there was an initial shortfall in environments but the instructor came to the rescue with another ESXi test environment before the start of lab 2.

One thing that was clear to me on this course is that the level of students ability on this course is much higher than I have seen on previous courses (not just with 360GSP but also other providers), it’s actually refreshing talking to other like minded people who actually know what the product does and how to use it.

During my time on the course I also managed to have a long conversation with the owner of 360GSP (Sher) and it was refreshing to see someone with such passion for his company and staff, it’s obvious that 360GSP are wanting to expand on their training offerings but are being somewhat held back by a lack of more decent instructors (there are only so many days a man can work).

The weekends we structured in such a way that course content was covered in a logical way and we weren’t left between subjects, this also allowed for a good mix of study and discussions between all of the candidates, it was really good to sit down during lunch and have a chat with Systems Designers, Architects and Engineers, the students are a mix of levels but all have a really good grasp on the various different aspects of the course.

It’s obvious that VMware have dropped various subjects from the curriculum, unfortunately these subjects aren’t the type that, in my opinion, should be left out (for example DVS, Host Profiles, DPM) and it was the same with 360GSP, Dai took the time to take us through the lessons from the ICM 4.1 class so that the class had a better understanding of the missing subjects to aid us in the studying for the VCP5 DV exam.

I have been very impressed with the level of instruction from Dai (who really should find the time to do his VCAP exams Smile) and the makeup of the students this time made for some very interesting class led discussions.
This has been one of the best classroom based training courses I have attended for a while, sure the 400miles of driving every weekend (£100 of fuel ) is still taking it’s toll (not just on me but the car as well which I don’t like putting extraneous mileage on) but the guys on the course and the course itself were worth every minute.
10/10 to 360GSP for the class and instructor and 11/10 to the students who made up the class and made it really enjoyable.
