Installing the Home Lab – Configuring ESXi Syslog Settings

10th December 2013 0 By Simon

In a previous post I installed and configured the Synology Syslog server to allow me to stop me getting the below message on my hosts.

The reason for the message is that I run my 3 ESXi hosts using SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB keys and as such there is no persistent storage for logs. In this post I am going to show you how to configure some VMware infrastructure to point to our newly configured Syslog server.

First we need to launch the vSphere client.

Click on a host (all of them will require the settings to be changed)

Click on Configuration and then Security Profile

Scroll down and click the syslog label, click OK

In the Software tab click the Advanced Settings

Click Syslog and enter the address of the Syslog server in to the Syslog.global.logHost box, click OK

Open the Syslog App on the Synology and look at the Overview, you should see your hosts starting to place logs on to the Syslog server.

In this post I showed how to configure your ESXi hosts to connect to a remote Syslog server (Synology DS1513+)
