Installing VMware Player 5.0.0 on Ubuntu 12.04

Just to give everyone a heads up that installing and running VMware Player 5 on Ubuntu 12.04 works perfectly and doesn’t require any additional steps to install apart from making the bundle executable (unlike previous versions which required manual patching, so a big thanks to VMware for finally fixing the issue Smile)

chmod +x VMware-Player-5.0.0-812388.x86_64.bundle

and then installing VMware Player, type in

sudo ./VMware-Player-5.0.0-812388.x86_64.bundle

Then just launch the application as usual 🙂

Oh and to make life easier for those people wanting to download VMware Player, VMware have now removed the requirement to have an account to download Player so another thumbs up to VMware for that Smile

  1. I have a problem while installing the same problem over my pc.
My pc is an intel i5 core 64 bit platform.
when i am installing the VMware it tells the following error,
    VMware-Player-5.0.0-812388.x86_64.bundle
This is a x64 bundle and does not match that of the current
architecture. Please download the x86 bundle.

Can any one tell a solution to this…

  2. Cody, are you running a 32bit or 64bit OS? Obviously the command above is aimed at the 64bit bundle so may well be whats causing your issues.

  3. It’s a 64bit system and after posting that comment I got it to work. Had the file in the downloads folder instead of home file. Its working just fine now

  4. Wow! this is awsome. It worked on mine. Prahu i think your problem is minor. Based on your statements, it implies your computer is 32 bits. So instead of downloading 64bundle, you are required to download VMware-Player i386.bundle. Wish you success.
